(January 12th, 2024) – Guelph, ON – The City is in the middle of a historic housing affordability and supply crisis. Across the city, families are struggling to achieve the Canadian dream of home ownership and find attainable housing.
Today’s announcement that the City of Guelph will receive $21.4 million from the federal government’s Housing Accelerator Fund is a major boost towards building more affordable homes. These funds will help Guelph reduce housing barriers, speed up approvals, and implement key policy measures like the city’s multiplex zoning policy.
Together these measures will help build 739 new housing units about the city average over the next three years. New housing in Guelph is badly needed by hundreds of young families in search of an affordable place to call home.
The Guelph & District Association of REALTORS® (GDAR) would like to acknowledge Mayor Cam Guthrie for his tireless efforts in support of the city’s application. Mayor Guthrie is a champion of smart and progressive housing policy and his efforts are generating results for the people of Guelph. We would also like to acknowledge local MP Lloyd Longfield and Minister Sean Fraser for their leadership in securing these funds for Guelph. Our elected leaders have stepped up in response to the housing affordability crisis and delivered when Guelph needed it most.
Dillon Fraser
2024 GDAR President
